Associate Civil Engineer - Park Ridge or Naperville, IL
Position Summary
Terra Consulting Group is looking for a qualified Associate Civil Engineer interested in engineering and real estate industries to join our team. They will be responsible for assisting the Civil Department Director, department heads, Project Managers and clients at various stages of development projects. Successful candidates will be detail-oriented and enjoy assisting interactions with staff and clients.
Essential Job Duties
Design multi-acre retail, commercial, industrial and/or residential development including due diligence, permitting and limited contract administration
Design of stormwater management system, stormwater analysis and floodplain management
Preparation and design of geometric, grading and utility plans
Coordinate utility connections & resolve utility conflicts
Produce documentation that incorporates vendor-supplied designs into Terra product. Plan, prepare reports, conduct calculations that include quantity estimates, engineers estimate of probable construction costs
Analyze survey reports, maps, drawings, GIS, aerial photography and other topographical or geologic data to plan projects
Provide client support and create quality deliverables and technical reports as well as address client questions regarding technical aspects of the project
Apply Terra standards and template utilization, enhancing existing templates
Research, understand and apply city, state and federal codes
Communicate tasks and schedule and coordinate project assignments with project team
Execute assigned tasks accurately, on schedule and within budget
Assist in the preparation of proposals for technical engineering portions of projects
Understand all contracted scope of work and monitor/process additional work authorizations when requested by client or required for project completion
Visit project sites as required
Perform quality control reviews of plans and reports before issuance
Coordinate, monitor and review work performed by sub-consultants and coordinate the project design with architectural plans
Provide technical support for customers and support regional business development initiatives as a technical resource
Promote the reputation of the company through the technical quality of his/her work and positive interactions in meetings and other interactions
Represent Terra professionally at all project-related meetings and inspections
Construction management of civil designs – RFIs, bid reviews, field changes and site visits
Reports to and receives guidance from the Civil Department Director. May also receive direction/need coordination with other department heads or Project Managers in multi-disciplined projects
Supervises engineers and CAD Technicians either full-time or a project-by-project basis
Technical expertise and leadership provided across organization
Mentor and coordinate with CAD Technicians and staff
Work in Assistant Project Manager role to support Project Manager or manage projects directly where appropriate
Minimum Qualifications
Land development management experience needed
Construction experience helpful
Strong knowledge of the technical aspects of the civil engineering practice
Thorough knowledge of all codes applicable to his/her discipline
Civil 3D and/or GIS optional
Critical thinking and problem-solving/analysis
Strong client relationship management skills including proposal writing and negotiations
Leadership and mentoring
Project and resource management
Communication proficiency with team members and clients
Ability to build relationships and interact with review agencies
Financial management to meet goals & objectives of the project budget
Stormwater design
Experience with permitting through government agencies
Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering
Passed the Fundamental Exam (FE) or Engineer in Training (EIT)
Professional Engineering License or working towards a Professional Engineer’s License
Ideally 3-10 years experience with progression to a similar position
Experience with Land Development projects
Experience with design software (AutoCAD Civil 3D and Hydrologic/Hydraulic design software)
Fluency with Microsoft Office Suite
Demonstrated background in plan production and project execution
CEU completion annually, as required by PE licensure
